Scottish Youth Fly Fishing Team
Each year the Scottish Youth National Competition is held to select young anglers that will represent Scotland. We run this competition at Lake of Menteith and the youths are paired up with a boat and boatman. The top 14 anglers on the day (included those in the team from the previous year) will then go on to represent Scotland the following year.
Anglers require to be aged between 12-18 years old.
Young anglers with a positive attitude and motivation to learn along with great teamwork skills and sportsmanship are the qualities required to optimise our Scottish National Team.

SCOTTISH YOUTH FLY FISHING TEAM
Scottish Youth Team Support
I have fly fished for 40 years and have gained a vast array of knowledge and experience. I have captained Scotland at senior level and have caps for loch style, rivers, and world competitions. I have also fished Commonwealth competitions in Tasmania and Wales.
A qualified SGAIC Casting Instructor and a UKCC Level 1 Coach. I have been involved with the Youth Team for the last 5 years as Youth Director and Team Manager, becoming involved with the team to give something back into fly fishing by passing my knowledge and skills on to the up and coming anglers, to help them better understand the art of fly fishing and the competition scene.

My name is Kirk Lyon and I have been fishing for 38 years, I am a keen trout and salmon angler and I also enjoy a bit of predator fishing. I have always enjoyed fishing as it is relaxing, and you meet a lot of nice people.
My older son was in the team for three years and really enjoyed his time in the team, my younger son is now in the team, and I have always wanted to put something back into the sport.
I have ben helping run the Youth Team for the last 5 years and I am currently the Secretary, Health & Safety Advisor and a Level 1 Coach for the Scottish Youth Team.

This is my second year as part of the Scottish Youth Team and I am proud to be this year’s National Champion and Team Captain. I recently took up competition casting and this year was the youngest ever competitor in the history of Spey Orama at Golden Gate Angling Club in San Francisco.
Sam Harrison
This is now my 4th cap with the team and I am looking forward to this years international at the Lake of Menteith. I have been fishing as long as I can remember. I have enjoyed my time in the team and I am looking forward to the years I have left in the team.

I have been fishing since I was little with my dad. This will be my 3rd cap for Scotland and I am looking forward to this year’s national.

I have been fishing for 3 years and this is my first cap. I won best newcomer at the Qualifiers in 2024 and I am looking forward to the international on the Lake of Menteith.

This will be my second cap with the team. I have been fishing for 7 years at my local fishery, Kinross and I am looking forward to the home international this year.

This will be my second cap for the Scottish Youth Team. I am 15 years old and I have been fly fishing since I was 8. I am looking forward to representing Scotland at our home international at the Lake of Menteith.
Harris McLeod
I have been fishing for around two years and this is my first cap for Scotland. I found it really difficult at first but with good help from people I’ve met and the fisheries I have been fishing at, it has been amazing and I am looking forward to the rest of the year.
Jake Gilchrist
This will be my 4th and final cap in the Scottish youth team and I’m excited to be able to finish on my home water, I have enjoyed every minute of the youth team and have had some amazing experiences and met some amazing anglers.
James Coull
Hi, my name is James Coull. This year will be my 3rd cap and last year in the team. I started fishing a good few years back now on the rivers and then started the trout stuff 5 years ago. The team has helped me come on a lot with fishing and met some great people through it, and I can’t wait to fish the Lake of Menteith at the home international.

I’m 15 years old and this will be my first Scottish cap. I’m really looking forward to the upcoming international competition on the Lake of Menteith. I’ve been fishing for 12 years and grew up fishing for brown trout in the highlands in Scotland and this is still my favourite type of fishing. I also love fishing the rivers for brown trout.

This will be my 4th cap with the Scottish youth fly fishing team and I am looking forward to fishing my home water. I have loved being in the team and learning different things and skills every time I’ve been in the team.

I have been fishing with my Grandpa and Uncles since a very young age. This will be my first cap and I am looking forward to the international.
Rory Stewart
This will be my 4th cap in the team and will be my first home international. I started fishing when I was 8 and I can’t wait to fish for Scotland on my home turf. I am also looking forward to meeting fellow competitors from previous years. Tight lines to all.

I’m 16 years old and this is my third cap for Team Scotland. I have been river fishing for 8 years for salmon and trout and took up loch style fishing 5 years ago with the Cormorants Club on the Lake of Menteith. I was the Scottish Youth Fly Champion 2023-24 and looking forward to competing again at our home international.

My name is Aiden Butters, I am 14 years old and I have been fly fishing for 5 years. This will be my first cap and I am looking forward to the whole experience and competing with the rest of the team at the Lake of Menteith.

This is my first cap in the Scottish youth team. I am 16 and started fly fishing around 8 years ago. I am excited to be representing my country on the Lake of Menteith this year.

My name is Joshua Brown.
I have been a member of the Scottish Youth Team for 3 years now. This will be my first cap at international level.
I have been fishing from the age of 7 and really enjoyed fly fishing and entering competitions in
my local area and on the Lake of Menteith,
But Im really looking forward to this international In Ireland.
Andrew Adams
This is my 4th year fishing in the youth team. My favourite method is fishing dry fly.
My favourite place to fish is the Black Loch with my Dad. I am really enjoying my time in the youth team.

This will be my 1st cap with the team. I’m looking forward to representing Scotland in Ireland.
I’ve been fly fishing for a couple years and have entered various competitions to keep improving.
I really enjoy fishing lochs and still waters, especially from a float tube. My regular water is is Kinross Trout Fishery.

I have been in the Scotland team now for 3 years and have enjoyed my time in the team, with
Ireland being my 1st cap at an international event.
My home fishery is Kingennie where I have caught
some of my biggest fish.

This is my first year in the Scotland youth team and it has already been a great experience and I can’t
wait for more to come.
The team has made my fishing improve by a country mile. Being in the tea has also helped my communication skills and so much more.

I’m 16 and have been been fishing for 5 years, this is my second cap for Scotland.
I enjoy all aspects of fly fishing and tying but my favourite flies to tie and fish are dry’s.

This will be my first cap. I have thoroughly enjoyed being involved with the team.
I only started fly fishing around 2 years ago and thanks to John Milne and the John McCann Fishing Foundation, they have helped me secure a place in the
Scotland Team.
Thomas McNaughton
In my time at the team I have learned about fishing deeper and how to find fish on bigger waters and change lines faster to suit the changing conditions on the water and all about fly’s and how to fish them in different ways than I would normally do, it has helped building my skills in the sport.
It is my first cap in the team.

I have been fishing for four years. I am currently EK Angling Club Junior Champion. This will be my first cap.

This will be my first ever cap with the Scottish team,
I am looking forward to be going to Ireland and enjoying my time
with the team.
Alex Stewart
This will be my second and final cap for the team. I started fly fishing when I was 13 but in those 6 years, I’ve learned from some of the best fishermen in Scotland.
Since it will be my last international, I’m more eager than ever for a Scottish victory in Ireland.

I was the youngest member to qualify for the team at 11.
I have won lots of competitions,
caught a salmon and an 18lb fish at Kingennie.
I have a really long cast and would like to try for the UK Flycasting Championships.

since i was 8 years old, I won the qualifying Heat which gained me my position to get into the team
and this will be my first international event.
