To trial for the Scottish Youth Team you must be under 18 years of age and over 12 years of age.

The team is (and always has been) made up of an array of experience levels.  Learning is all part of the experience, journey and progression – as Fly fishers we learn something new every day!  We have members who have fished for only a year and other since they were six.  Gaining useful experience is key to progressing and learning quickly.

A minimum level of time commitment (self-learning) and training days (on the water) is expected when part of the team.  These days are key to ensuring everyone has equal amounts of training.

Thanks to the variety of sponsors, donors and fund raising by the committee, the SYFFT organisation aim to keep the experience of representing the team at international level cost neutral.  These costs includes travel, accommodation, fishing and equipment.  The SYFFT committee are committed to ensuring no child cannot experience fishing for the country through lack of funds.  On occasion a nominal fee is charged for covering training days.

You only need the amount of equipment you currently use to catch fish and have fun.  It can be daunting seeing other anglers with huge amounts of tackle, however, its often how you put it to use that makes the best anglers!  It helps to have a balanced outfit with a good selection of flies and various fly lines but generally speaking use what you feel comfortable with and where possible the SYFFT committee can advise and assist in any gaps there might be.

There are 16 members in the squad and 14 make the team.  The other 2 make up the reserves and are privy to the full team training and international experience.  There are also 2 training positions available.

Yes, all of our coaches and committee members have undergone XXX level coaching as a minimum and are PVG resisted.  Certification and license numbers can be obtained contacting us here.

This isn’t a problem, often the best anglers start fishing small waters and progress to fishing large waters with ease.  Please don’t be put off by this as the same flies and methods work across both disciplines.
